Building a Road or Tunnel

If you are building a road, tunnel, parking lot, or any other structure, you need to make sure that the ground is properly graded. The ground is the area on which your foundation rests, so you need even ground that is well compacted and graded. To get that properly done, you first need to employ surveyors. Surveyors are professionals who look at the area, take models of the land, input them into computers, and come back with specific numbers.

Hire Surveyors

When you hire surveyors, they will first ask you what you intend to do with the land. The survey they come up with will be very different depending on what you plan to do with it. If you’re building a parking lot, you might be able to get away with slope to your land. However if you’re building a road or a tunnel, you’ll need much more specific grading requirements. They’ll ask you how you intend to change the land, and then they’ll begin the surveying. They’ll take measurements of the ground in small sections and input those measurements into a computer that digitally maps the land and produces models. Those models will give you the precise cut and fill requirements of the land.

Cutting and Filling

As the name implies, the process involves cutting the earth in one place and filling it in others with the earth you removed. It is the most efficient and time-saving way to fill and grade the land. For example, if you have gently undulating ground that you need to be completely level, you can try to scrape away the top layers of soil until it is all level but that is a very large earthmoving project and you also don’t have anything to do with the removed earth. You can make an embankment out of it or find some way to dispose of it, or you could have it mapped by surveyors.

They’ll recommend where you should cut the hills and how much earth you should remove. You can then use that earth to fill in the valleys. Once compacted and smoothed, all of that land will be even without losing any soil. There is no wasted soil and no wasted effort. Cutting and filling is one of the most effective ways to make your land hospitable to building.

Hiring a Surveyor

You should hire surveyors who also do the work. This is important because they’ll understand precisely what goes into it, but also because they’ll be able to offer you the services if you accept their surveying recommendations. You won’t have to hire someone new to get the work done; they’ll understand precisely what you are trying to do and why.
